Paper king crowns coloured by children, colouring pages, a paper star and a galette on a wooden table

Three Kings Day Crafts for Kids: Paper Crowns, Colouring Pages and Epiphany Games for Ages 3–7

On 6 January many families celebrate Epiphany – the day the three kings, or wise men, followed the star to the stable in Bethlehem. For children it is a day full of magic: in Spain the Reyes Magos bring presents, in Italy la Befana fills the stockings, in France families share a galette des rois – usually on the first Sunday of January, 3 January in 2027 – and everyone hopes to find the fève, and in Germany the Sternsinger go from door to door. Three Kings Day crafts for kids are a lovely way to join in: colour the kings, make a paper crown and play a little game together. Here are ideas for ages 3–7 and a free printable crown template to try.

What’s in the Three Kings Day Activity Pack?

The Three Kings Day Activity Pack is a printable PDF with 14 A4 pages for children aged 3–7, in four editions: Español, Italiano, Français and Deutsch. There is no English edition – each one follows its own country’s tradition. Every edition has a cover with a “This book belongs to” line, a page for grown-ups about the tradition with tips, 6 colouring pages with captions in big hollow letters, 2 crown templates with paper strips to fit the head, a maze where the kings follow the star to the stable, 2 special pages and an end page. The special pages are a letter to the Reyes Magos and the roscón game (Spanish), a letter to la Befana and a stocking to hang (Italian), the galette slices game and a king’s or queen’s certificate (French), and a door blessing sign and a big Sternsinger star (German). Want to try it first? Download the free sample – 5 pages, including the first crown. Like the pack, the sample comes in Spanish, Italian, French or German.

Three Kings Day crafts for kids aged 3–5

  • Make a paper crown: colour the king’s or queen’s crown, cut it out together and glue the strip so it fits your child’s head.
  • Colour the camel: its decorated saddle blanket has lots of little shapes to fill with colour.
  • Colour the big letters: every colouring page has its caption in hollow letters – a gentle first look at words.
  • Follow the star: in the maze, little fingers lead the kings to the stable.

Epiphany crafts and games for ages 5–7

  • Write a letter: Spanish children write to the Reyes Magos, Italian children to la Befana – my name, how I behaved this year and what I would like. Children who cannot write yet can draw instead.
  • Play the cake game: in the Spanish and French editions, 8 slices are coloured and cut out. One hides the figurine or the fève – whoever finds it becomes king or queen and wears the crown.
  • Hang it up: the Italian stocking goes on the wall, and the German door sign with 20*C+M+B*27 goes on the front door.
  • Make a star: with the big star from the German edition, children can sing at home like little Sternsinger.

More Three Kings Day crafts with things you have at home

  • Toilet roll kings: paint three cardboard rolls, add paper crowns and faces – Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar.
  • Handprint camel: a brown handprint turned upside down – the fingers are the legs and the thumb is the neck.
  • Star on a stick: cut out a big yellow card star, decorate it and tape it to a paper straw to lead the kings around the house.

These three ideas are not in the pack – all you need is card, paint and glue.

Tips for a happy Three Kings Day

Use thicker paper for the crowns. 160–200 g/m² paper keeps a crown standing; ordinary paper is fine for colouring. Measure first. Wrap the strip around the head before you glue it. Prepare the cutting. For the youngest, cut out the slices or the star in advance – small cut-out parts are not suitable for children under 3. Make it a little party. Crowns on, the cake on the table and the slices game for the whole family. Use it in class. Teachers can print the pack for their own class and show how Epiphany is celebrated in different countries.
