Thanksgiving Activities for Preschoolers and Kindergarten: A Week-Long Classroom Plan

Thanksgiving Activities for Preschoolers and Kindergarten: A Week-Long Classroom Plan

Planning the short week before Thanksgiving for a room full of excited little ones? If you teach preschool or kindergarten, the right Thanksgiving activities for preschoolers and 5- and 6-year-olds can turn the holiday buzz into calm, focused learning. Below is a breakdown by age, a five-day classroom plan and the fine-motor and early-literacy skills behind each activity, so you can explain the “why” to families and administrators.

Thanksgiving activities for preschoolers (ages 3–4)

At this age, the goal is big movements, simple choices and lots of talking. Keep each table activity to 10–15 minutes.

  • Big-shape coloring pages. A turkey, pumpkins or falling leaves with thick outlines. Let children use chunky crayons and talk about colors as they work.
  • Torn-paper turkey feathers. Children tear strips of orange, red and brown paper and glue them behind a turkey outline. Tearing strengthens the same finger muscles they will later use to hold a pencil.
  • Leaf sorting. Collect real leaves on a walk and sort them by color or size on a tray.
  • “I’m thankful for…” circle time. Each child names one thing; you write it on chart paper next to their name.
  • Turkey movement songs. Waddle, gobble and flap through a short song between table activities.

Thanksgiving projects for kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Kindergartners are ready for multi-step projects, a little writing and simple puzzles.

  • Disguise a Turkey. Send a turkey template home as a family project or do it in class with a box of scraps. Children plan the disguise, decorate it and present it in one or two sentences.
  • Mazes and word searches. A Thanksgiving maze builds pencil control and planning; a word search practices letter recognition and left-to-right scanning.
  • Thankful cards. Children color a card and write or dictate what they are thankful for, then give it to someone at home.
  • Counting the harvest. Count mini pumpkins, corn kernels or paper leaves into numbered cups (keep tiny objects away from younger siblings and any child under 3).
  • Class gratitude chain. Each child writes or draws one thankful thing on a paper strip; link the strips into a chain for the classroom door.

A five-day Thanksgiving week for the classroom

Most schools have a short Thanksgiving week, so adapt this plan to the days you have. The coloring page, the Disguise a Turkey template, the placemat maze and word search, and the thankful cards come from our printable pack; the rest are simple ideas you prepare yourself.

  1. Day 1 – Hello, fall. Nature walk and leaf sorting; afternoon coloring page. Read a fall picture book.
  2. Day 2 – Meet Tom the Turkey. Introduce Disguise a Turkey. Preschoolers color and glue scraps; kindergartners plan and name their disguise.
  3. Day 3 – Puzzle day. Placemat maze and word search at table time; turkey movement songs at circle.
  4. Day 4 – Thankful day. Thankful cards and the class gratitude chain. Each child takes a card home.
  5. Day 5 – Feast and share. A pretend or real class snack “feast,” turkey presentations and a gallery walk of the disguised turkeys in the hallway.

Fine-motor and early-literacy skills behind each activity

  • Coloring: grip, hand strength and staying near a line.
  • Tearing, gluing and decorating: pincer grasp, bilateral coordination (one hand holds, one hand works).
  • Mazes: pencil control, visual tracking and planning ahead.
  • Word searches: letter recognition, scanning across and down, and matching printed words.
  • Thankful cards and dictation: oral language, the idea that spoken words can be written down, and early name writing.
  • Presenting the turkey: speaking in front of a group, sequencing a short explanation and listening to classmates.

Printing for a class: US Letter or A4

The Thanksgiving Kids Activity Pack comes in both US Letter and A4, so it fits US classroom printers and international schools alike. Everything prints in black and white. Teachers may print it as often as they like for their own class or group; please do not share the files with other classrooms. For the turkey project, cardstock holds heavier decorations, and placemats work best printed in landscape. Children who use scissors need an adult nearby, and small cut-out parts are not suitable for children under 3.
